u-blox 5 ICs set a new standard for GPS and GALILEO receivers. Powered by the high performance 50-channel
u-blox 5 positioning engine, these ICs provide excellent performance and flexibility at an economical price. A
32-channel acquisition engine with over 1 million effective correlators is capable of massive parallel searches.
This enables a Time To First Fix (TTFF) of less than 1 second, while long correlation/dwell times make possible the
best-in-class acquisition and tracking sensitivity. An available functionality is KickStart, a new feature enabling
accelerated acquisition of weak signals. Once acquired, satellites are passed on to a power-optimized dedicated
tracking engine. This arrangement allows the GPS and GALILEO engine to simultaneously track up to 16
satellites while searching for new ones. u-blox 5’s advanced jamming suppression mechanism and innovative RF
architecture provide a high level of immunity to jamming, ensuring maximum GPS and GALILEO performance.
u-blox 5 positioning technology has been specifically designed for applications with tight cost, size and power
constraints. Its highly integrated architecture brings the complete positioning process, from antenna input to
position data output, into a compact self-contained solution requiring few external components. The BOM
consists of a minimal number of components that are all low cost and passive. An integrated LDO and LNA is
included, there is no need for an external Flash EPROM. Crystals as well as TCXOs are supported. u-blox 5 ICs are
designed to allow 2-layer PCB integration, and their small footprint enables cost-effective use of board area.
Innovative power hardware and software features ensure very low power consumption. The fully integrated
Power Management Unit (PMU) allows for a single supply voltage source. All required core and I/O voltages are
generated internally by means of LDOs (Low-Drop-Out Regulators).
u-blox 5 ICs are available in two different packages: A single-chip version (2 dies in 1 parcel) has the RF and
baseband ICs integrated into a single 56-pin MLF package measuring 8x8 mm. Alternatively, a dual-chip version
is available with the RF-IC in a 4x4 mm 24-pin MLF package and the baseband-IC in a 9x9 mm 100-pin CVBGA.
With the dual-chip solution the External Memory Interface (EMI) can be used to connect an optional external
